Pediatric Eye Care

Dr. Pruthi heads Vantage Eye Center's pediatric ophthalmology program. Examinations specifically geared towards infants and children allow for a comfortable experience for the child and the parents as well. This is important to accurately diagnose and treat pediatric eye conditions such as strabismus (crossing of the eyes) and amblyopia ("lazy eye") at an early age to prevent permanent visual deficits. A wide selection of children's eyeglass frames is available in our optical shop for those children who need glasses. In 1994 Dr. Pruthi became the first doctor in Monterey County to use Botox for the treatment of strabismus.

Dr. Bernardino also treats children with oculoplastics conditions including a droopy eyelid (ptosis) or tearing since birth (congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction). A droopy eyelid can often block the normal development of vision leading to amblyopia and strabismus. Early intervention by Dr. Bernardino can allow for normal visual development in these patients.

For children with tearing since birth, evaluation and treatment of a blocked tear drain (nasolacrimal duct obstruction) can prevent long term ocular discomfort and eye infections, and the need for more invasive surgical procedures.

Pediatric outpatient procedures for crossed eyes, droopy eyelids, or blocked tear drains usually take about an hour to perform, and are available at Vantage's on-site surgery center.
